Getting the Famicom Generation's Hearts Racing!
The Timeless Charm of “Ninja JaJaMaru-kun” & The Romance of Retro Collecting
Does anyone else remember being a kid, snapping that vibrant pinkish-purple cartridge into your Famicom with a satisfying click and losing yourself in the game?
Today, we’re taking a nostalgic dive into Jaleco’s legendary 1985 action classic, Ninja JaJaMaru-kun—and why right now, in the Reiwa era, picking up a pristine “Complete in Box” (CIB) copy is an absolute must for retro game enthusiasts.
Breaking Through Ceilings & Mowing Down Tricky Yokai: Pure Exhilaration!
The core mission is classic retro gaming at its finest: rescue Princess Sakura from the clutches of the villainous boss, Catfish Taifu (Namazu Dayu). The action unfolds across four tiered levels in a classic side-scrolling platformer setup.
Smashing through ceiling blocks with headbutts, stunning quirky Yokai like Otama (the sorcerer), Hedobon (the skeleton), and Karasu Tengu with your shuriken, and then squishing them underfoot... the fast-paced combat loop felt incredibly satisfying back in the day.
What made the game even more memorable were the charming stage gimmicks and enemy entrances. As you cleared floors, Oyuki the Snow Woman appeared amidst a freezing blizzard; or series-staple Kurobee peeked out from behind walls. Even as enemies, their cute and endearing designs kept players endlessly hooked.
Power-Up Pandemonium! Going Unstoppable with Iconic Items
The items hidden inside the ceiling blocks were the real stars of the show, turning every run into a thrilling adrenaline rush:
The Ultimate Trump Card — “Gama Pack”: Collect three items scattered across the stage—such as the Cherry Blossom, Koban coin, and Katana—and a giant frog (Gama) summons onto the screen. Once you trigger the “Gama Pack,” JaJaMaru mounts the giant frog and goes wild! Trampling and devouring every enemy on screen in total invincibility was an intoxicating rush like nothing else.
High-Stakes Thrills — The Minecart: Hopping into the minecart that occasionally pops out of broken blocks gives you temporary invincibility, allowing you to charge forward and run over enemies. But just when you’re speeding through high on adrenaline, Lord Namazu drops bombs from above without mercy, making you panic with a frantic “Aaaagh!” Looking back, even those heart-pounding moments are fond memories.
Why Complete CIB Copies Deserve Your Attention Right Now
While Ninja JaJaMaru-kun is packed with childhood nostalgia, there is a fascinating trend happening in today’s retro gaming market.
Put simply: Complete-in-box (CIB) copies—including the outer box, instruction manual, and original plastic inner tray in pristine condition—are available today at remarkably reasonable prices.
