The Rapid Angel (快速天使) was released for the Sony PlayStation on August 13, 1998, by Techno Soleil. Carrying the Model ID SLPS-01553, its original retail price was ¥6,380. At the time, Techno Soleil was a virtually unknown boutique developer with only a handful of titles under its belt, most notably the cult shmup Gaia Seed.

By 1998, the rise of 3D polygonal hardware like the PlayStation and SEGA SATURN caused traditional 2D side-scrolling action titles to vanish rapidly from store shelves. While major publishers focused their resources on polygon-based games, Techno Soleil pushed forward with a 2D sprite-based side-scroller. Because of that prevailing market shift toward 3D, the game’s initial print run was heavily limited from day one.

The story centers on a delivery company named “Rapid Angel”. A mysterious client drops off a package that turns out to contain top-secret government documents. Discovering the true nature of the cargo drags the three female couriers into an escalating conflict with a hostile syndicate. Players can choose between three distinct protagonists: Natsumi, a close-quarters hand-to-hand brawler; Ayane, a swordswoman; and Haruna, a ranged specialist. Beyond standard combat, stages feature diverse environmental gimmicks alongside 2-player co-op to keep the gameplay from feeling repetitive.

What makes this game truly stand out is its voice cast. The production features legendary voice talent from late-90s anime—including Atsuko Tanaka (Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell), Norio Wakamoto (Cell in Dragon Ball Z), Ryuzaburo Otomo (Sir Crocodile in One Piece), Yoku Shioya (Ryota Miyagi in SLAM DUNK), Kazuki Yao (Franky in One Piece), and Houko Kuwashima (Sango in InuYasha)—complete with fully voiced anime cutscenes throughout. While rough gameplay mechanics earned it a harsh 19/40 from Famitsu at launch, the title found a warm reception in overseas retro communities. Its international cult following grew further after digital re-releases landed on the Japanese PlayStation Network in 2009 and the North American PS1 Classics Import section in 2011.

In today’s second-hand market, complete boxed copies typically trade between ¥50,000 and ¥70,000 (~330–460 USD). The combination of low original print numbers, rising Western collector demand, and strict requirements for mint-complete sets keeps prices firmly supported. Under Japanese retro collecting standards, a true CIB copy requires five essential components: the jewel case, manual, game disc, spine card, and original registration postcard. Missing either the spine card or postcard disqualifies a copy from complete status.

Listing Analysis

• Item Link: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m68684158617

• Price: ¥45,999 (approx. $305 USD)

• Condition: Case, Manual & Disc Included (Spine card and registration postcard missing)

  • Notes: Disc surface is scratch-free. The jewel case is in clean condition with no major cracks. Manual shows slight handling wear but has no notable tears, stains, or creases. Tested and boot-verified on PS2 hardware (title screen photo provided).

The first detail to verify on any high-end PS1 listing is operational testing. The seller confirmed boot stability on a PlayStation 2 console and provided clear photos of the title screen. Unlike blind listings that simply claim “tested” without proof, having visual confirmation of boot status significantly reduces purchase risk on a disc nearing 28 years of age.

The cosmetic condition is also solid across the board. The disc reading surface shows no visible scratching which is a crucial factor since surface scuffs is the primary reason behind PS1 laser read errors. The jewel case remains solid without structural damage, and the manual is clean with only minor handling wear, indicating careful long-term indoor storage.

The real compromise here is the missing spine card and registration postcard. Without both inserts, this copy cannot be graded as a definitive 5-piece complete set. If your collection requires a strict 100% CIB archive copy, this unit will not check every box.

However, given that boxed copies with manuals routinely trade between ¥50,000 and ¥70,000, paying ¥45,999 for a clean, verified copy without inserts represents an attractive discount below market rates. The verified boot status and pristine disc condition keep functional risk low. For players looking to experience the original hardware or collectors comfortable with the missing inserts, this listing represents a sensible, well-priced pickup.

Beyond the nostalgia, let’s look at why a pristine CIB copy carries so much value in today’s retro market.

⚔️ The Iconic Helm Splitter and the Unforgiving Traps

Stepping into the boots of the warrior Clovis, players set out to rescue Princess Celia from the clutches of a dragon. What really hooked players in 1987 was the groundbreaking sword combat that was well ahead of its time. The biggest highlight was the iconic Helm Splitter (兜割り / Kabuto Wari): double jumping into the air and plunging your blade straight down into an enemy’s skull. If you ever landed that clean hit, the muscle memory is probably still wired into your hands.

Of course, the dungeons crawled with classic 80s arcade punishment. Slashing helplessly through invincible Zombies that refused to take damage was terrifying enough. Linger too long in one room, and the music shifted as Cave Shark showed up to ruthlessly shred your vitality. And if the monster snatched your trusty Sword right out of your hands, the sudden dread and pure helplessness were unmatched. Anyone holding a controller back then definitely stared at their CRT in disbelief at least once.

👑 Slaying the Dragon and The Ultimate 8-Bit Reward

Planning your path across the dungeon map and rationing magic spells like Fireball gave the game genuine tactical depth.

Fighting your way past the massive Dragon waiting at the end felt incredible. Better yet, clearing stages rewarded you with a glimpse of Princess Celia. Watching her design update with each milestone was such a drive back then. It was more than enough to keep throwing yourself at those relentless dungeons.

📈 This CIB is A Complete Steal

Dragon Buster brings back so many bittersweet memories, and finding a mint complete copy at this price point is an incredible opportunity.

Despite offering museum-grade presentation—complete with the outer box, manual, and rare period-correct extras like the original “Namcot Information” flyer and registration postcard—this complete set remains available at an accessible price point compared to other heavy hitters of the era. For collectors looking for high display value without insane markups, it’s a standout pickup.

🎮 Listing Breakdown

• Condition: Complete in Box (CIB) — Includes outer box, manual, gold cart, Namcot flyer, and registration postcard. High preservation grade with clean edges.

✨ Final Verdict: Save the Best Seat for This Masterpiece

That gleaming gold cartridge sitting on your shelf does more than just catch the light. It puts a piece of early action-RPG history front and center. Whether you’re coming back to avenge a lost sword or want to land that crisp plunging attack one more time, this complete copy is well worth bringing home.

If you seek a specific Holy Grail in the Japanese underground market and demand our uncompromising vetting process, this private dispatch is available.

Type the title into your phone or PC, and boom—secondhand retro shops, online marketplaces, and auction sites instantly serve up hundreds of listings. If you’re lucky enough, you might even stumble across a factory-sealed copy of a game released decades ago.

Before the internet, though, searching for games was a completely different beast.

In those days, my search engine was literally just my two feet.

Discovering Monster Lair at the Arcade

I first fell in love with Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair at my local arcade, sinking countless coins into the machine.

Eventually, I picked up a PC Engine and learned that Monster Lair had actually received a home port. I was dying to see how faithfully the console version stacked up. Gaming magazines at the time praised it as a remarkably faithful conversion, which only poured fuel on the fire. I had to have it.

The problem? It was nowhere to be found.

Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Akihabara. Whenever I had free time, I hit the major electronics retailers and secondhand shops. No dice. Completely out of stock everywhere.

Desperate, I even reached out directly to the publisher, Hudson Soft. The verdict? No plans for a reprint.

At that point, my only remaining hope was the classifieds in gaming magazines.

Mail-Order Ads: The Original Monthly Search Algorithm

Back then, gaming magazines ran dense, multi-page classified ads from mail-order shops in the back.

On modern e-commerce sites, you just hit the search bar. On paper, there’s no Ctrl+F. I had to scan through walls of tiny print, line by line, hoping to spot Monster Lair.

Since these were monthly magazines, if a lead went cold, you had to wait an entire month for the next issue. Even when an ad did list the title, you’d sprint to a payphone the day the magazine dropped only to hear that it was already sold out.

What takes five seconds of Googling today took an entire month of waiting, train rides, and endless walking.

And still, Monster Lair eluded me.

Finding the Grail When I Wasn’t Even Looking

One day, after weeks of fruitless hunting, I headed into Shinjuku to pick up an entirely different game. Out of sheer habit, I glanced over at the department store’s game section.

And there it was. A brand-new, factory-fresh copy of Monster Lair.

The very game that seemed extinct across Tokyo—the one Hudson explicitly told me would never be reprinted—was just sitting right there on the shelf while I was out running an unrelated errand. If memory serves, it was even marked down about 10% off retail. Whether it was a quiet restock or forgotten backroom inventory, I’ll never know.

I was thrilled, of course, but another thought immediately hit me: What were all those weeks of relentless searching even for?

Still, because it had been such an ordeal to track down, that exact moment of spotting it on the shelf remains burned into my memory three decades later.

Fast-Forward 30 Years: Hunting from the Couch

Roughly 30 years later, searching for obscure retro titles takes mere seconds online.

Type in “Monster Lair” today, and you can casually stumble across a factory-sealed copy like this:

• Item: Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair (PC Engine CD-ROM²)

• Listing: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m78969295674

• Condition: Brand New / Unopened (Factory Sealed)

• Price: ¥19,100 (approx. 120 USD)

A quick note on sealed retro games: Reseals are always a concern in the collector community. However, with the specific shrink-wrap and seam style on this particular PC Engine jewel case, replicating that factory finish by hand is exceptionally difficult. While photos alone can never offer 100% certainty, the seam integrity and aging suggest this is very likely a genuine unopened copy.

From “Where Is It?” to “What’s Out There?”

A game that once had me scouring Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Akihabara on foot just to find a single copy can now be bought sealed without even leaving the couch. That doesn’t mean the magic of browsing physical retro game shops is gone.

It’s just changed.

Back then, store runs were all about tracking down one specific game. Today, because we can locate any title online in seconds, hit-the-pavement runs are about discovering unexpected gems. In short, the hunt shifted from “Where is it?” to “What’s out there?”

Yet, that pure adrenaline rush of sifting through stacks of games and pulling out the one? That hasn’t changed a bit.

If you seek a specific Holy Grail in the Japanese underground market and demand our uncompromising vetting process, this private dispatch is available.

The Addams Family was released for the Super Famicom on October 23, 1992, by Misawa Entertainment. Carrying the model number SHVC-AF, its original retail price was ¥9,400 (approx. 60–65 USD). Developed by the renowned UK studio Ocean Software, this licensed title was based on the massive 1991 hit live-action movie.

You play as Gomez Addams, the head of the household. Your mission is to rescue your family members trapped across the estate by a devious lawyer and recover your stolen family fortune. Instead of a straightforward linear level structure, the game features a Metroidvania-esque open exploration setup: starting from the main entrance of the vast Addams mansion, you can explore areas like the conservatory, gardens, cellar, and graveyard at your own pace. The core action revolves around jump attacks to stomp on enemies. Picking up swords and special items along the way gradually expands your area of movement. The mansion is packed to the brim with hidden rooms, secret passages, and tricky traps, making for an insanely dense exploration experience. Combined with slippery momentum-based controls and unforgiving enemy placements, it’s a notoriously hard platformer that demands real skill to beat.

Back in 1992, western-developed action games were usually avoided by Japanese players due to their quirky controls. Coupled with an unusual release by a home construction giant (Misawa Homes) and a hefty price tag of ¥9,400, domestic distribution ended up quite limited. Despite looking like a casual movie tie-in, its git-gud difficulty caught gamers completely off guard. However, thanks to its gorgeous gothic pixel art and an impressive SNES rendition of the iconic movie theme song, it has earned a well-deserved cult status over the years.

What keeps its price tag high today is the combination of low domestic supply in Japan and strong overseas collector demand. The IP’s global popularity surged again following Netflix’s viral series centered on the eldest daughter, Wednesday, bringing fresh attention to legacy titles. Western collectors particularly covet the Japanese release for its unique vertical cart design and distinct box art, making the Misawa Entertainment version a prized collector’s item compared to the standard Western SNES releases. In today’s retro market, loose carts go for ¥2,000–¥3,000 (approx. 13–20 USD), decent CIB copies sit around ¥8,000–¥12,000 (approx. 53–80 USD), and mint complete copies reach up to ¥15,000 (approx. $100 USD).

Listing Analysis

• Price: ¥20,000 (approx. $130 USD)

• Item Link: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m85241013451

• Condition: Brand New / Unused (Outer Box Included); Minor dents and light shelf wear on the bottom and side of the box; Unopened inside and unverified working condition.

The main focal point here is that a 30+ year-old game is being listed as Brand New / Unused. Since Japanese Super Famicom games didn’t come shrink-wrapped out of the factory, proving a copy is factory-new without opening it is always difficult. Because this listing is unverified inside, risks like missing inserts, swap-outs, internal aging, or non-working carts still exist.

That said, a closer look at the photos gives us a pretty clear picture. First, the chances of this being an authentic copy are extremely high. Judging by the cardboard texture and print quality, the possibility of it being a bootleg is very low. What really stands out is the nature of the box damage. While the scuffs and dents are concentrated around the corners and edges, there is virtually none of the edge wear or white fraying typical of pre-owned games. That type of wear suggests pressure marks from being stacked inside cardboard boxes in a warehouse, pointing strongly to unsold deadstock (NOS).

The seller’s feedback is also solid, with zero red flags or complaints. They frequently deal in brand-new, unopened items; if they had a habit of passing off opened goods as new, their feedback rating would have reflected that by now. If the inside has truly remained untouched all these years, you’re looking at a potential goldmine: an unfaded inner tray, a pristine unpowered cart, crisp unbent manuals, and all original inserts and registration postcards intact.

Considering CIB copies go for ~¥10,000 (approx. $65 USD) and pristine complete sets hit ¥15,000 (approx. $100 USD), ¥20,000 (approx. $130 USD) for a Brand New copy is a solid deal. While there’s an inherent risk with unverified internals, the box wear pattern and seller credibility make this a gamble worth taking. If you’re comfortable with the cosmetic box flaws shown in the pictures, this is an easy cop.

CIB Copies Are Vanishing

The real terror of this game is that Complete-in-Box (CIB) copies have practically vanished from the market. Any seasoned retro game hunter knows that cult classics like this sell out the instant they are listed. This is definitely one of those “buy it when you see it” titles.

At ¥21,500, it’s certainly not cheap. However, that price factors in the constant anxiety that it might vanish from the market forever. Countless collectors have hesitated on a clean boxed copy, only to watch it disappear to another buyer days later. While loose cartridges of Dan are tossed into bargain bins, boxed copies in great shape will only get scarcer every day. The speed of each sale makes this game almost like a fine art investment.

Insane Difficulty That Forged a Legend

You can’t talk about Bio-Senshi Dan without mentioning its ruthless difficulty. Horrifying “Increaser” mutations, complicated map layouts, and relentless traps turned the game into a brick wall for kids back in the day. Yet, that seemingly unreasonable challenge was precisely what stoked our drive to beat it. It was the adrenaline rush after finally clearing a nightmarish area, or the feeling of total invincibility when equipping hidden Bio-Suits that got us addicted.

This is a raw, unvarnished high that modern games with polished UIs simply can’t replicate. The ¥21,500 price point reflects a deep craving among adult collectors to own a piece of their own gaming battle history. Paying that price isn’t just about buying game pixels; it’s about reuniting with the younger version of yourself who fought, raged, and fell in love with the challenge.

Listing Evaluation: Jaleco Paper Box in Perfect Condition

Item Details:

• Price: ¥21,500 JPY (approx. 140–150 USD)

• Target URL: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m68218551164

• Condition: Complete in Box (CIB) / High-Grade Box & Manual Condition

Profiling this ¥21,500 copy from a collector’s perspective highlights exactly why it commands such a premium.

First, consider Jaleco’s unique box packaging from the late ‘80s. Jaleco paper stock crushes much easier at the corners compared to other publishers, and its heavy black borders and dark gradient prints easily show scuffs and fingernail marks. This particular copy, however, is in mint condition with no crease lines or tears even on the box flaps.

Furthermore, the inner clear plastic tray which cradles the cartridge shows minimal yellowing and no brittle cracking. This is a major detail for collectors, as these trays easily shatter in dry winter cold or during transit. The included manual has no rust on its staples or humidity warping, confirming that the previous owner stored it carefully in a dark, climate-controlled space.

Just look at the cover art featuring the protagonist in his bio-weaponized armor. Displaying a box like this on your collection shelf isn’t just retro game collecting. It’s the ultimate flex of owning a slice of the gloriously unhinged diversity that defined the Famicom era.

Don’t Let Future You Regret Missing This

Opportunities to grab a copy of Bio-Senshi Dan in this pristine condition are rapidly drying up. Acquiring this piece means taking the torch from two generations: the original kid who marveled at its unknown world, and the collector who lovingly preserved it for decades.

¥21,500 is simply the ticket price to becoming the preserver of this history for future generations. You can either watch the listing turn to SOLD, or claim it for your personal collection. Wake up the gamer inside you from the CRT era and pull the trigger.

Illusion of Gaia is an action RPG released for the Super Famicom by Enix (now Square Enix) on November 27, 1993. Carrying the model number SHVC-JG, its original retail price was ¥9,800. The game was developed by Quintet—a studio founded by former Nihon Falcom staff—and stands as a masterpiece alongside Soul Blazer and Terranigma as part of the celebrated “Quintet Trilogy.”

At the core of the gameplay mechanics is the protagonist, Will, who transforms through Dark Spaces into Freedan the Dark Knight, and later into Shadow. Each form possesses distinct abilities required to traverse the dungeons. Moving away from traditional experience point leveling, the game employs a progression system in which clearing all enemies of an area rewards the player with stat-boosting jewels. By eliminating tedious grinding, the design prioritizes player skill and the rewarding thrill of exploration.

What makes this title particularly extraordinary is the creative pedigree behind its production. Legendary shōjo manga artist Moto Hagio served as the character designer, shaping a delicate and melancholic aesthetic. The scenario was penned by Japan SF Grand Prize-winning author Mariko Ohara, crafting a poignant drama centered on young boys and girls swept up by a cruel fate. Complementing this is Yasuhiro Kawasaki’s mythic, nostalgic soundtrack, which elevates the game’s ethereal atmosphere.

The story takes place across real-world ancient ruins, including the Nazca Lines, the Great Wall of China, and Angkor Wat. Setting itself apart from the mainstream "heroic fantasy" tropes of 1993, the narrative moves beyond conventional tropes to address somber historical realities including slavery, ecological ruin, and moral compromise under extreme conditions. This deep thematic nuance left an indelible mark on players of the era, securing its enduring legacy.

Overseas, the game was published in 1994 by Nintendo under the title Illusion of Gaia to high critical acclaim. However, due to Nintendo of America’s strict localization policies at the time, much of the religious symbolism and dark narrative elements were heavily censored or altered. Consequently, modern international fans actively seek out the original Japanese version, even sparking fan re-translation projects to faithfully restore Ohara’s original Japanese text. In today’s retro market, loose cartridges fetch around ¥1,500–¥2,000, boxed copies with manuals go for ¥3,000–¥5,000, and CIB copies reach upwards of ¥6,000.

EXAMINING THE LISTING

Item Information

Title: Gaia Gensōki / Illusion of Gaia (Super Famicom)

Buyee Listing: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m92684091893

Price: ¥3,999 (Approx. $25 - $27 USD)

Contents: Box, Manual & Cartridge (CIB minus inner plastic bag, registration postcard, and AC adapter insert)

• Box Condition: Signs of use, corner crushing, and edge wear

• Manual Condition: Cover peeling/creased; interior pages remain clean

• Cartridge Condition: Excellent condition; tested and working

Collector’s Evaluation

The seller mentions finding this copy during a warehouse cleanout. While not a dedicated collector, they appear to be selling off a sizable collection of retro video games.

With games over 30 years old, operational failure is the biggest risk for buyers. However, this seller provides multiple photos showing the game actively booted on original hardware, eliminating functionality concerns. Their thorough disclosure of conditions instills immediate buyer confidence.

The indicators of authenticity are also clear:

• 2-digit factory stamp debossed on the back label

• Twin circular indentations on the lower corners of the rear shell

• Authentic metal security screws on the front shell

• Crisp print quality and accurate color palette on both the box and cartridge label

This is almost certainly an original domestic Japanese release manufactured in 1993, rather than a modern counterfeit or reproduction bootleg.

From a strict condition grading standpoint, the listing takes points off for the outer box wear, minor inner tray damage, creased/peeled manual cover, and missing inserts (inner bag/postcard), meaning it cannot be categorized as “Complete / Mint.” However, the inner pages of the manual remain clean, and the cartridge shell itself is virtually free of scratches, grime, or severe yellowing. It gives the distinct impression of an item that was stored safely in a dark space for decades after being passionately played and read through by its original owner back in the day.

Final Verdict

With boxed copies averaging ¥3,000–¥5,000 and pristine complete copies reaching ¥6,000, a tested, working boxed copy priced at ¥3,999 represents a very fair deal. The seller’s transparent disclosure makes it a relatively low-risk purchase.

While it may not suit high-end purists seeking flawless mint-condition items, it offers incredible value for players who want a physical boxed copy to hold in their hands while experiencing Moto Hagio’s artwork and Mariko Ohara’s uncensored original narrative.

RETRO CULTURE / JAPAN

The sleek black cardboard box looked impeccably clean, hardly reflecting its age of over three decades. The item description read “Brand New / Factory Sealed,” adding, “There are no opening creases on the box flaps.”

Of course, this particular product has no direct relation to the story I am about to tell. Yet, looking at this sealed copy of Romancing SaGa, I was suddenly reminded of a reader submission I had read in a gaming magazine long ago. That story, too, featured a copy of Romancing SaGa that had been preserved without ever being opened.

A Game Unwanted, Alongside Dragon Quest V

Before the internet was a thing, gaming magazines were not just a place to discover upcoming releases or strategy guides; they were a community space where you learned how fellow players bought and experienced their games.

The letter I read was from a gamer who had bought Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. They ONLY wanted Dragon Quest V. However, the retailer forced them to buy Romancing SaGa together as a mandatory bundle—a practice known in Japan as “tie-in sales.”

It wasn’t a game they bought by choice. As a result, Romancing SaGa remained unopened, tucked away somewhere at home—or so the submission went, if I remember correctly. Since I read this over 30 years ago, I can’t recall the specific magazine or the exact wording. Still, the story of leaving an unwelcome filler game sealed stuck with me.

Back then, “tie-in sales”—where retailers forced customers to buy less popular titles alongside highly anticipated hits—became a notorious issue in the Japanese gaming industry. Because it was such a reality of the era, that story felt deeply authentic to my younger self.

Factory Sealed Doesn’t Always Mean “Cherished”

Today, factory-sealed retro games often fetch a pretty penny.

When we see a sealed copy, we naturally assume that it has been treasured and stored carefully as a collector’s item. However, recalling that old magazine story makes me realize that isn’t always the case. That gamer didn’t keep Romancing SaGa unopened because it was precious to them. They kept it closed simply because they didn’t want to play it.

Some games have worn-out boxes and names scrawled in marker on the cartridge because they were played to death. On the flip side, some games remain brand-new simply because no one ever cared to play them. The physical condition of a surviving item tells us how well it was preserved. Yet, why it ended up in that condition can never be read from its exterior alone. This copy of Romancing SaGa reminded me of that simple fact.

What If That Gamer Had Opened the Box?

I have never played Romancing SaGa myself, so I can’t evaluate this game from a player’s perspective. However, looking back at its history, Romancing SaGa was released in 1992 as an ambitious RPG featuring a “Free Scenario System.” It allowed players to choose from eight main characters and shape the narrative based on their choices. Rather than just following a linear storyline, your adventure morphed according to your decisions. For its time, this was an incredibly daring design.

On the other hand, the Super Famicom version is infamous among collectors for its numerous bugs, coding errors, and seemingly unfinished event triggers. Later on, when it was ported to the WonderSwan Color, many of these bugs were fixed and game balance adjustments were made. In short, rather than labeling it simply as a “good” or “bad” game, it was a title that possessed both brilliant ambition and structural instability.

This makes me wonder: what would have happened if that gamer had opened the box back then? Having been forced to buy a game they didn’t want, only to run into bugs and obscure mechanics, they might have felt thoroughly vindicated in not wanting it in the first place. Or, captivated by a level of freedom unlike any other RPG, they might have found themselves completely obsessed with a game they had originally written off as unwanted baggage.

Never having played it myself, I can’t sit here and promise they would have had a blast. And that is exactly why, even after 30 years, I remain so intrigued.

Authenticating a Box Preserved for Over 30 Years

Let’s take another look at the Romancing SaGa listing found on Mercari.

Item Information

• Item: Romancing SaGa (Super Famicom)

• URL: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m72490861528

• Price: ¥32,900 (Approx. $210 - $220 USD)

• Condition: Factory Sealed / Brand New (新品未開封)

• Seller Notes: No opening flap creases.

When inspecting a cardboard Super Famicom box, there are several key points to check in photos: color fading, corner wear, crushing, and damage around the opening flaps.

Based on the attached photos, there is no noticeable major fading or corner crushing, and the deep black base color of the box appears well-preserved. However, photos alone can never offer a 100% guarantee. Also, because it is sealed, you cannot directly inspect the internal condition of the cartridge, manual, or inner tray. If you were to purchase it, you should take into consideration both what can and cannot be verified.

You Can Authenticate the Condition, But Not the “Why”

Inspecting this listing brought another realization.

By scrutinizing the posted photos and weighing evidence like box condition and flap integrity, you can authenticate to a reasonable degree whether the item is truly factory-sealed. Nevertheless, no matter how much you zoom in on the photos, there is something you will never know: “Why was this box never opened?”

Was it preserved as a cherished collector’s item? Did someone buy it with every intention to play, only to run out of time? Or, like the magazine reader from all those years ago, was it a game they never actually wanted in the first place?

Of course, this Mercari listing has no relation to the Romancing SaGa mentioned in that old magazine article. It would be foolish to project that old narrative onto this specific item. While we can evaluate the physical condition of a game, we can never evaluate the journey that brought it here. Perhaps that, too, is something we must keep in mind when dealing with retro games.

Digging for Items, Unearthing Memories

While searching for Super Famicom games, I happened to find a single sealed title. What I dug up wasn’t merely a copy of Romancing SaGa. Triggered by that black box, a reader’s letter from a magazine over 30 years ago was unearthed from the depths of my own memory.

Did that gamer end up never opening the box? Or did they suddenly decide to unseal it one day years later? And if they did play it, were they frustrated by the bugs and rough edges? Or were they spellbound by the freedom of its non-linear system?

We will never know the answer. There are things we can authenticate, and things we cannot. Still, as we search for an item, verify its state, and ponder its background, forgotten memories of our own can suddenly surface.

Perhaps retro game digging isn’t just about unearthing physical items—that was the thought left behind by a sealed copy of Romancing SaGa.

Game consoles and PCs come with built-in recording functions, and you can even capture footage directly from an HDMI output. Search YouTube, and you can easily find videos of vintage games, including complete playthrough all the way to the ending.

Things were different, however, when the Famicom was still in its heyday. When playing the Famicom version of Operation Wolf, I preserved play footage on a VCR. At the time, I had my Famicom connected via composite video, but recording gameplay was nowhere near as simple as pressing a single button like it is today. Every time, I had to connect the game console to the VCR, prepare a VHS tape, and then start recording.

Looking back, it was quite a hassle.

Still, I recorded my Operation Wolf playthrough for the sole reason that I wanted to watch the footage as many times as I wanted. But when I actually sat down and watched the recording, I discovered something unexpected: games were fun not only to play but also to “watch.”

When Playing Became Watching

While playing, I was completely fixated on knocking out the enemies popping up one after another. I never had time to enjoy the entire screen.

But when watching a recording, I no longer had to worry about the controller. For the first time, I could truly appreciate everything happening on the screen. Of course, there is little point in comparing the Famicom’s graphics with those of modern games.

The hardware was subject to major limitations, and it was impossible to bring an arcade game over to a home console exactly as it was. Even so, watching my recordings of Operation Wolf over and over, I began to admire the ingenuity of the creators to convey as much of the atmosphere of the original game as possible within the hardware’s limitations.

The recording itself was also far from being as clear as digital video is today. Sometimes it was difficult to make out the finer details on the screen. But I had played the game so many times that I already knew what was supposed to be displayed there. I watched the footage while filling in the blanks with my memory.

Strangely enough, that was part of the fun, too.

Before YouTube, There Was the VCR

And now, in the present day.

YouTube is filled with videos of people playing the Famicom games of that era.

Comments on these videos sometimes say things like:

“Considering the Famicom’s specs, this is surprisingly well made.”

“It’s impressive how much they managed to accomplish with such limited hardware.”

Whenever I see comments like these, I remember the days when I recorded Operation Wolf on my VCR. Needless to say, back then, home video games were simply something you played. I never thought of “analyzing game footage.” I certainly never imagined that a time would come when people could use the internet to share their own gameplay footage with people all over the world.

Come to think of it, I was already enjoying games not only by “playing” but also by “watching” them, back in the VHS era. As I repeatedly played back the recordings, I began to notice the details in the visual design and clever touches of the creators that I had never noticed while actually playing.

Digging for a Gem: Operation Wolf on Mercari

That same Operation Wolf is now listed on Mercari as “new and unopened.”

https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m76685741032

Price: ¥3,700.

This particular copy appears to be in good condition. However, if it were me, I would not conclude from the photos alone that this is an unopened copy. You should also take into consideration the seller’s rating and description of the product. Also, if a game is still sealed in shrink wrap, the application and the seams of it can also provide useful clues. This type of product, however, did not come with shrink wrap, nor does it have a seal that would indicate that it has never been opened.

With Operation Wolf, it is extremely difficult to tell from the outside alone whether a box has never been opened or not. So, if it were me, I would consider the extent of my assessment to be this: “The item appears to be in good condition, and the seller is offering it as new and unopened. However, it is difficult to verify from the photos alone that it has never been opened.”

When it comes to evaluating retro games, identifying a genuine item isn’t the only thing that matters. Knowing where to draw the line and say, “This is as far as I can tell,” is also part of being a good judge of a collectible.

Games are fun to play. And it’s fun to watch the games you’ve played long after the fact, too. Perhaps it was the Famicom and a VCR that first taught me to enjoy something that has since become so commonplace.

The narrative unfolds in a distant future where a massive machine intelligence known as “GaiaSeed” regulates both Earth’s environment and human civilization. A century prior, an old prototype unit named Uranus was ejected into deep space following a research accident. As Uranus unexpectedly drifts back toward Earth, humanity authorizes the deployment of Adamas—a remote-guided, self-repairing tactical weapon—to intercept and destroy it. Players step into the mind of Cronus, a young man selected as the virtual pilot due to his exceptional sensory synchronization. Across 7 horizontal-scrolling stages, the game features a multi-ending narrative architecture where your actions mid-flight branch out into 3 distinct endings. Structurally, it is uniquely defined by its adoption of a dedicated health gauge system—a rarity for 90s side-scrolling shmups—meaning a single hit does not result in instant death.

What the community holds in the highest regard is the game’s world-building and sound design. Opening with an evocative, poetic cinematic sequence, the BGM composed by Naoto Ishikawa (who later contributed to Otomedius) is of exceptionally high caliber. The Stage 1 track, “Zimetsu Minzoku” (Self-Destructing Race), is still celebrated among fans as an absolute masterpiece of console audio. Conversely, public opinion remains polarized regarding its unpolished visual graphics and heavy aesthetic homages to rival shmups. Yet, rather than fading into the darkness of history as just another obscure release, it has cemented its legacy as a cult classic defined by unmistakable artistic merits and distinct characteristics.

Techno Soleil released a few more titles for the PS1 before quietly exiting the game development industry following the release of TALL TWINS TOWER in November 2000. Today, all 4 software titles published by the company are notoriously difficult to acquire on the secondary market and command extreme premium prices. GaiaSeed stands at the very apex of this lineup, consistently worshipped alongside Cotton 100%, Kyuiin, and Harmful Park as part of the “Holy Grail” tier of impossibly rare PS1 shmups. In the current used market, prices for a copy with the original box and manual have skyrocketed to between 40,000 and 60,000 JPY. The extremely limited production run by an unknown developer directly translates to its insane modern-day scarcity.

Salvaging from the Mud: Profiling a Playable Artifact (Obi Missing, Value Intact)

• Target URL: https://buyee.jp/mercari/item/m76395385502

• Condition Profile:

  • Box, manual, and disc are included.

  • Obi (spine card) and registration postcard are missing.

  • Zero visible scratches on the disc surface.

  • Instruction manual shows minor handling wear, but remains in beautiful condition considering its age.

  • The jewel case is in solid condition.

  • Confirmed boot-tested and in working order.

• Price: 42,200 JPY

The single most critical factor to evaluate here is the explicit notation that its operation has been verified. For an optical media title released roughly 30 years ago in 1996, the fact that the seller has guaranteed it boots up is a massive factor in mitigating the risk of laser read failures caused by physical aging. Compared to unverified “as-is” junk listings, the difficulty of this gamble drops dramatically.

The physical condition is also at a highly respectable standard. The flawless condition of the optical disc surface is vital; since physical abrasions are the leading cause of read failures, a clean, scratch-free unit offers high operational reliability. While the manual exhibits slight curling, it is completely free of ink stains, harsh creases, or tears—representing negligible degradation given the decades that have passed. The well-preserved state of the case further indicates that the item was stored with care by its previous owner.

The primary point of contention is the missing Obi and postcard. Because it lacks these two elements, this unit cannot be classified as a pristine “Complete in Box” (CIB) set for strict archival collectors. However, when benchmarked against complete copies that currently reach up to 60,000 JPY on the secondary market, a confirmed working copy priced at 42,200 JPY without the Obi/postcard represents a fierce market arbitrage. If your acquisition criteria strictly demand full completeness, this won’t meet your conditions. But for those seeking a playable artifact, or if your collecting style tolerates the absence of the paper inserts, the powerful backing of a confirmed working status makes this a target absolutely worth securing.
